How the plan works

Your plan has to survive a bad year.

Markets fall. These rules keep your plan standing when they do.

Tested at a lower return

So you know how much room your plan has before markets test it.

Your SIP keeps going in a fall

Agreed in advance: a falling market is when your monthly amount buys the most.

Steadier as your goal gets close

Money you need soon moves, step by step, into steadier funds.

How this is worked outShow

Month by month, with each fund in the model portfolio growing at its own average monthly return over the past 10 years. What you have saved is invested now; the monthly amount is the least that leaves the goal’s cost after tax when everything is sold in the year you need it. The chart shows the plan before tax. Real returns go up and down, and the next 10 years could be quite different.

Tax on selling: 20% on equity gains held 12 months or less, 12.5% after, and 30% on debt-fund gains. The yearly equity-gains exemption, cess and surcharge are not included. An illustration, not a forecast or a promise of returns.

A doctor couple in their late thirties, Guntur

Two children, aged 6 and 9, and savings spread across an endowment policy, an RD and a few funds bought at different times, without a target for any of them.

Now: Two monthly amounts, one per child, raised a little each year with their income. A yearly review against both dates.

FAQs

Your questions about saving for goals.

What returns does the calculator use?
Each fund in our model portfolio, four equity funds and two debt funds held 50:50, grows at its own actual average return over the past 10 years: about 13% a year for the portfolio as a whole. Not a rate we assumed. Past performance may or may not be sustained in future. In a review call we also test your plan at lower returns, so you know how much room it has.
Why does starting later cost so much more?
Money put in early has longer to compound. Starting three years late means fewer months to save and less time for growth, so each month has to carry more of the load.
Can I plan for more than one goal?
Yes. Run the calculator once for each goal. In the review we bring them together into one plan, so the monthly amounts and timelines fit your income.
What happens as the goal gets close?
Money you need within a few years should not depend on the market. As each goal approaches, its money moves step by step into steadier funds.
How much do I need to start?
Many schemes accept SIPs of a few hundred rupees a month; each scheme’s documents set its minimum. What matters more is the amount your goal needs, which is what the calculator tells you.
SIP or Sukanya Samriddhi for a daughter’s education?
They do different jobs and can sit together. Sukanya Samriddhi is a government scheme for a daughter, with a rate set every quarter and tax-free returns; a SIP in mutual funds can grow faster over long periods but moves with markets. Many families use both for the same goal.
Can I open a SIP in my child’s name?
Yes. A minor can hold a mutual fund folio with a parent or legal guardian operating it. When the child turns 18, the folio changes over to them, with their own KYC and bank account.
How much should I step up my SIP each year?
In line with your income, often 5% to 10% a year. A step-up lets you start with a smaller amount and still reach the goal; the SIP calculator shows how much difference it makes.
