How this is worked outShow

Month by month, with each fund in the model portfolio growing at its own average monthly return over the past 10 years. What you have saved is invested now; the monthly amount is the least that leaves the goal’s cost after tax when everything is sold in the year you need it. The chart shows the plan before tax. Real returns go up and down, and the next 10 years could be quite different.

Tax on selling: 20% on equity gains held 12 months or less, 12.5% after, and 30% on debt-fund gains. The yearly equity-gains exemption, cess and surcharge are not included. An illustration, not a forecast or a promise of returns.

Why it matters

Your goal costs more every year you wait.

Prices rise, and some rise faster than others. Plan for what your goal will cost in the year you need it, not what it costs today.

Savings at the end of each year, before tax, on the model portfolio’s average past returns; after tax in the goal year they cover the cost. Past performance may or may not be sustained in future.

How to use it

The goal calculator, in 4 steps.

  1. 1Pick what you’re saving for. It sets how fast that cost usually rises, which you can change.
  2. 2Enter what it would cost today, and the year you need it.
  3. 3Add what you’ve already saved for it.
  4. 4Read the result: what it will cost then, the monthly amount that gets you there after tax, and what starting three years later would take.

How it’s worked out

The method, in plain English.

  • The goal’s cost grows by its own rate every year: education faster than most things.
  • What you’ve saved stays invested. It and each monthly amount grow at the model portfolio’s average past returns, about 13% a year.
  • The calculator tries monthly amounts until what you’d keep after tax, selling everything in the goal year, covers the cost.
  • Each instalment’s gain is taxed when sold: 20% on equity held 12 months or less, 12.5% after, 30% on debt funds.
  • Starting later uses the same method with fewer months, which is why it costs so much more each month.

What a goal will cost

Cost then = Cost today × (1 + rate)ⁿ

  • Rate: how fast the cost rises each year
  • n: years until you need it

₹ 25 lakh × (1 + 10%)^15 = ₹ 1.04 crore. At 7% a year, the same ₹ 25 lakh would come to ₹ 69 lakh.

FAQs

Your questions about saving for goals.

Mutual Fund investments are subject to market risks, read all scheme related documents carefully.

How do I work out how much to save for a goal?
You need three numbers: what the goal costs today, how fast that cost rises, and how many years you have. The calculator grows the cost to the year you need it, counts what you have already saved, and works out the monthly amount that covers the rest.
How much will my child’s education cost in 15 years?
If fees rise about 10% a year, costs roughly quadruple in 15 years: ₹10 lakh today becomes about ₹41.8 lakh. Your own number depends on the course and where it is studied, so put your own figures into the calculator.
Why does starting later cost so much more?
Money put in early has longer to grow. Starting three years late means fewer months to save and less time for growth, so each month has to carry more of the load.
Can I plan for more than one goal?
Yes. Run the calculator once for each goal. In a review call we bring them together into one plan, so the monthly amounts and timelines fit your income.
What happens as the goal gets close?
Money you need within a few years should not depend on the market. As each goal approaches, its money moves step by step into steadier funds.
What returns does this calculator use?
Each fund in our model portfolio, four equity funds and two debt funds held 50:50, grows at its own actual average return over the past 10 years: about 13% a year for the portfolio as a whole. Not a rate we assumed. Past performance may or may not be sustained in future, and the next 10 years could be quite different.
What inflation should I use for my goal?
The calculator starts with 10% a year for education, 7% for a home or a wedding, and 6% for retirement. These are assumptions, not forecasts; if you know your goal’s costs have risen faster or slower, change the rate. A higher rate makes the goal cost more, and the monthly amount rise with it.
Should I invest a lump sum or a SIP for a goal?
Whatever you already have can go in now, and the calculator counts it as saved. A SIP then covers the rest from your monthly income. For a goal many years away, both can sit in the same funds; as the goal gets close, money moves step by step into steadier funds.
