Fund categories, explained

Conservative hybrid funds mostly bonds, a little in shares.

A conservative hybrid fund keeps most of its money in bonds and a small part, a tenth to a quarter, in shares. It aims to do a little better than a debt fund, with a little more movement.

Conservative hybrid funds or an FD?

Neither is better in general. It depends on when you need the money and what you can live with along the way.

Risks, tax and getting your money out.

The risks, plainly

  • The share portion can pull it down in a bad year for markets.
  • Bond prices fall when interest rates rise, and a borrower defaulting can reduce value.
  • Each scheme shows its riskometer and Potential Risk Class; check both before you invest.

How it’s taxed

With most of the fund in bonds, gains are taxed at your income-tax slab rate when you sell, like a debt fund. Nothing is taxed while you hold the units.

Getting your money out

  • Redemptions usually reach your bank within two or three business days.
  • Many charge an exit load if you sell within a year; it varies by scheme.

FAQs

Your questions about conservative hybrid funds.

What is a conservative hybrid fund?
A hybrid fund with 75% to 90% in bonds and 10% to 25% in shares. It aims to earn a little more than a debt fund over time, with a little more movement in value.
Is it good for retirees?
It can be one part of a retirement plan, for money not needed in the next few years. It can fall in value, so money for the next three years is better kept outside the market, in an FD or the Senior Citizens’ Savings Scheme.
How are conservative hybrid funds taxed?
With most of the fund in bonds, gains are taxed at your slab rate when you sell, like a debt fund. Tax rules change with budgets; we check the current position with you.
Can I take a monthly income from one?
Yes, with a systematic withdrawal plan (SWP), which sells a few units each month. The SWP calculator shows how long a withdrawal can last.
Conservative hybrid fund or FD?
An FD pays a fixed rate, doesn’t fall, and is insured up to ₹5 lakh per bank; its interest is taxed every year. A conservative hybrid fund can do a little better over several years, can fall a little along the way, and is taxed only when you sell. It suits money for later years, not the next three.
Is a conservative hybrid fund safe?
It is among the steadier hybrid categories, not risk-free: the share portion can pull it down in a bad year for markets, and bond prices fall when interest rates rise. Check each scheme’s riskometer before you invest.
